ATHENS - A wildfire raged close to a village near the Greek capital Athens, sending people fleeing from their homes and workplaces Thursday and damaging buildings, officials said.

Wildfires are frequent in Greece during the summer, often caused by high temperatures, drought or arson. Hundreds of fires have scorched swathes of forest land across the country since the beginning of August.

Geneva, 6 July 2009 (WMO) – The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) are collaborating to reduce disaster risk throughout South-East Europe. A new project, supported by the European Commission, seeks to enhance risk assessment and early warning systems for weather and climate extremes through strengthened cross-border cooperation and coordination among weather and climate information providers and disaster management agencies.

Increasing flood hazards may present challenges for agriculture, and summer irrigation shortages may result from earlier spring runoff peaks in some regions. Conversely, the need for effective adaptation will be greatest in Southern Europe as a result of increased production vulnerability, reduced water supply and increased demands for irrigation. Increasing flood and drought risks will further contribute to the need for robust management practices.

Since changes in climate, agricultural ecosystems and hydrometeorology depend on complex interactions between the atmosphere, biosphere and hydrological cycle there is a need for more integrated approaches to climate impacts assessments.

As a major metropolitan area with close to 15 million residents, İstanbul has its own share of water issues. A summer drought in İstanbul last year left city reservoirs with the lowest water levels in the last decade, prompting the İstanbul Waterworks Authority (İSKİ) to make efforts to minimize wasted and illegally taken water.

In Turkey there are differing rainfall patterns depending on the region. Rainfall is high in the northern parts of the country, but it is considerably low in central Anatolia - the figures vary widely, from 2,500 millimeters to 50 millimeters annually.
